The Great Lakes Electric Meter School (GLEMS) originated in 1989 by a committee composed of members of electric utilities, electric utility manufacturers and experts in the utility field.
GLEMS is a week of instruction and networking for employees in the electric utility industry including

- Introduction to Poly Phase Meter Installations
- Application and design of Electric Meter Installations
- Advanced Metering Systems and Industry Trends
- Setup and Troubleshooting of Distribution Controls
- Energy Industry Forum
- Laboratory based instruction offers students "hands on" environment
- Project based instruction where students are required to work in the vendor display area to design a metering installation based on a given scenario.
- Classroom based instruction, offering pre and post tests
- Students receive a certificate and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from Ferris State University upon successful completion of courses.
GLEMS strives to become the ultimate educational resource for electric utility employees.
